Every even year, the world-renowned International Organ Festival Haarlem takes place during the last two weeks of July. Peter Ouwerkerk is the General Manager of this Festival since 2010. During the 1950’s, the festival was founded as a small improvisation competition being part of the Holland Festival, in order to give the cultural life in the capital of Noord-Holland a refreshing boost after the Second World War. The ‘Organ Month’ of Haarlem grew until it became literally and figuratively spoken a transboundary event. This led to the 50th edition which was celebrated in 2014, with an anniversary concert by Ton Koopman and Olivier Latry and the publication of a comprehensive Jubilee Book in which Peter inter alia designed the cover and wrote an article about the history of the Summer Academy of the Haarlem Organ Festival. More than 200 musicians from all over the world travelled to Haarlem for the anniversary and the number of visitors at the concerts reached over 10.000.
The preparations for the upcoming festival, which will be taking place from the 16th till the 30th of July 2016, are already going on.
